Fire In Hampton

Driving back from campaigning in Hampton today, I found myself being diverted because of a “major incident”. I have just found out that a major fire broke out this morning in Garrick’s Villa in Hampton Court Road, which was why all the traffic had been diverted.

David Garrick, who lived in the 18th Century, was a noted Shakespearean actor and the house is of enormous historic importance. It appears that the emergency services were on the scene very quickly and thankfully no one was injured.

I hope that the situation is salvageable and that no long-term damage has been done, although I have heard that the entire roof has been destroyed as well has half of some of the other floors. A real tragedy.

The Other Big Political Story

One of the side-effects of the banking crisis is that the focus of political reporting in the last couple of months has had a natural bent towards economic policy and the recession.

In the meantime, the other strands of Government outside the Treasury carry on and with the summer recess over, Gordon Brown will be turning his mind to the legislative programme for the forthcoming year.

A little good news, a lot of bad…

I thought I’d at least give you a bit of good news on a Monday…

The Times is reporting that the Government are planning to drop their plans for 42-days’ detention, as they realise they will not get the bill through the House of Lords.

Unfortunately, that’s it for the good news.
