Since then, the phrase has been recalled in a variety on contexts, but perhaps none that is so relevant as the recent story that has set the political blogging alight over the last few days…

Gagging councillors

Apologies for the radio silence readers, but I have been laid low with a nasopharyngitis horribilis (stinky cold to us mere mortals) over the last couple of weeks, but am now happily out of the bunker and back in action.

One of the stories that has caught my eye during my hermetic few days is the furore over the circular sent by Richmond Council’s Environment Director, Trevor Pugh, asking elected representatives (councillors) not to intervene in parking enforcement cases when approached by residents.

A lifeline for Post Offices?

Update (20th March 2008): The Conservatives unfortunately lost their motion in the commons to prevent the closure of 2,500 post offices nationwide. The Government majority was, however, cut to 20 - the lowest since Gordon Brown became Prime Minister.

We will now need to look at alternative ways of campaigning against closure. More soon…
