In a tightly-fought final furlong, Nick Clegg has won the LibDem leadership race by the narrowest of margins - 511 votes or 50.6% of the vote against Chris Huhne’s 49.4%.
May I offer my congratulations to Nick and commiserations to Mr Huhne.
Once again, Labour have excelled themselves the extent to which they wish to use the taxpayers’ money as a piggy bank to finance themselves in the style to which they wish to be accustomed.
A major report, which was commissioned by the Government, overseen by Labour supporters and will be handed to Local Government Minister Hazel Blears on Monday, is to recommend massive payments to councillors. Council tax bills will be hiked to help the cash-strapped Labour Party and unemployed Labour cronies.
Given the fact that council tax bills have doubled in the decade that Labour have been in power, to an average of £1,400, the Labour-dominated ‘Councillors Commission’ is to recommend shocking cash handouts for councillors across the board.
On Friday 17th December, a new leader of the LibDems will be announced - this will be the third they’ve had in as many years, although short of breathtaking scandal, I am moderately confident that the winner will be around for longer than poor Ming was.
Aside from the brief titillation of the “Calamity Clegg” dossier, the contest has been almost entirely without incident, including any solid policy debate. It would therefore be the easiest thing in the world to say that whoever wins will make no difference, as the battle lines in politics have moved decisively back towards the two-party system, with more and more issues differentiating the Tories and Labour by the day.
