Vince Cable announced yesterday that he would be boycotting King Abdullah’s forthcoming visit to the UK, because of Saudi Arabia’s human rights record and the controversy over the BAE deal and allegations of corruption surrounding it.
I don’t have a problem with politicians taking a moral stand where they feel it is appropriate. Indeed, I have been critical of the Saudi regime myself (for a number of reasons not mentioned by Dr Cable) and agree that their Human Rights record is less than desirable. As a result, I see no reason to criticise Cable on making a stand on a matter of conscience. After all, that is what we elect our representatives to do.

Today, I received communication from Conservative Councillor Geoffrey Samuel that he was urging his LibDem colleagues on the council to join him in lobbying the Government against confiscating funds from local schools that have been fortunate enough to have a surplus in the current fiscal year.
I wholly support this action and will write to Vince Cable to request he does the same in Parliament with my blessing and support.
It is outrageous that schools that have been prudent with their funding should be punished like this. It also prevents schools from “saving up” for expenditure which they could never afford in a single year; finally it goes against everything this government preaches on decentralisation and local management and accountability.
This is precisely what I mean about politicians needing to trust professionals. I hope that Twickenham’s Conservatives and Liberal Democrats will work together to ensure this injustice does not occur.

Breaking news today from David Cameron’s press conference.
“…he promised that the Conservatives want to scrap the new Communications Allowance available to MPs. ”
I have criticised Vince Cable and Susan Kramer for voting with Labour and claiming this £10,000 per year piggy bank of corruption since the Parliamentary vote in March 2007 (see my original article on this subject).
Let me repeat my first political pledge:
I will not claim this allowance when I am elected to be your MP.

It appears that just about everyone in the country wants a referendum on the “amended” EU Constitution, oops Treaty, except for the two L’s - the Liberals and Labour.
Gordon Brown has made it clear that the “red lines” that he himself invented have been retained and therefore the treaty that most in the know say is “90% the same as the constitution” does not need to go to the popular vote. This is despite a clear manifesto pledge that the British people would have a vote on any new treaty put before us.
Is it any wonder that people do not trust politicians anymore?

A message of support from myself and all of Twickenham Conservatives to our rugby team ahead of tomorrow’s World Cup Final.
You’ve done this country proud and shown how determination, hard work and team spirit can overcome the worst of odds.
Good luck and I hope to see that trophy in Twickenham, where it belongs!
