Yet another interesting week, politically, in the run up to the local elections being held across much of the country this week.
The Conservative Party is feeling buoyant and we hope to capitalise on the slump that the Labour party and the Liberals are currently wallowing in. However, to be arrogant and assume that we have the right to strengthen our position as the largest party in local government would be a huge mistake and will reaffirm the view of many voters that we are only thinking of ourselves. The final say will come down to you, the voter, and although there are no elections in London, the results will have major ramifications in Twickenham.

Congratulations to Helen Whately, who was last night selected to be the Conservstive candidate for Kingston & Surbiton. She is an excellent candidate and I look forwards to working with her in the coming period to ensure the whole of South West London turns blue in the next election!
It is an honour to learn that the former leader of the Ulster Unionist Party has decided to become a Conservative Peer in the House of Lords.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner has a lifetime of political experience and was instrumental in securing the Good Friday agreement in 1998 and paving the way for the power-sharing agreements that are currently underway in Northern Ireland.
I have been privileged to meet him on a number of occassions and have always been impressed by his warmth and good humour. I wish him the best of luck and look forwards to hearing his contributions in the upper house.
It has been a terrible few months to have been a member of the Labour Party - civil war is breaking out over both the Labour leadership and deputy leadership, policy making is in total disarray, the foolishness of the Defence Secretary has made a laughing stock of our armed forces and Gordon Brown is now potentially facing a vote of no confidence from the Conservatives for his role in the iniquitous pensions tax.
